MOLLY GODDARD

FETISH:  SILK TULLE, COTTON AND SILK PRINTED CORDUROY, NYLON AND POLYESTER

WHY THEY WANT THIS: Incredible colour and voluminous silhouettes took to the stage for Molly Goddard’s modern couture inspired Autumn Winter 2016 collection on Saturday evening.

Presented in the Tate Britain, Goddard’s show took us back to an Haute Couture salon one would only assume to see Marie Antoinette floating around in. Goddard’s models were directed to sit, talk, frolic and potter. We even got to hear some of these beautiful women playing on the white grand piano (talk about grandeur). The light was low and a hum of fashion chatter and praise for the designer’s work warmed the room. The show was nothing short of a utopian dreamscape set in an early surrealist time period.

WHAT IT DOES TO THEM: Goddard’s collections never fall short of every girly girl’s (wet) dream. Her ruffled sugar pink dresses complete with a stunning diverse range of models give a depth to her clothing line that is becoming synonymous with her name. Each garment exhibited gathered at different parts of the body, emphasizing her versatility as a designer for her varied consumers. Her colours are limited to a bright and playful palette yet her more formal experiments with black and sepia cater for a more diverse audience. Pieces that stood out were Goddard’s sepia dress accompanied by an aqua velvet and silk skirt overlay and finished off with thick black ribbon shoulder ties and her corduroy and cotton printed midi dress. You may not be into pink and frilly but it turns out there’s a little bit of Goddard for everyone after all.

WHAT’S THE CLIMAX? : It was a family affair. Goddard’s mother and father designed the set for the evening and Alice, the designer’s sister, conducted the styling. At every point (especially early) in the evening you could catch Mrs. Goddard flying around keeping photographers and press at bay – understandably, you wouldn’t want anyone getting their fingers on the work of your precious daughter.
